"Are gym clothes toxic?" sounds like a scare headline until you look at what goes into performance kit. The answer is more boring than either extreme: most gym clothing isn't toxic in any everyday sense, but some activewear does involve PFAS — and it's worth knowing which pieces, and why.
What PFAS actually are
PFAS stands for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances: a family of thousands of synthetic chemicals built around extremely stable carbon-fluorine bonds. That stability is the whole point. It makes them very good at repelling water, oil and grease. It is also why they've been nicknamed "forever chemicals" — they break down very slowly in the environment, and some accumulate in water supplies and in the body.
Which gym clothes contain PFAS?
Not all of them, and probably not most of them. Plain polyester or nylon-elastane kit — leggings, shorts, base layers, running tees — is made from synthetic polymer fibres, but the fibre itself isn't PFAS. Where PFAS have traditionally shown up is in the finish rather than the fibre:
- DWR (durable water repellent) coatings on waterproof jackets, running shells and winter cycling gear.
- Stain- and water-resistant treatments on technical outerwear.
- Some older water-repellent finishes on softshells and trousers.
So the waterproof shell you wear for winter runs is a far more likely candidate than the leggings in your gym bag.
Does that mean your kit is harming you?
The honest position: less alarming than the headlines, less settled than anyone would like.
PFAS as a class are genuinely under scrutiny, and regulators have restricted specific compounds such as PFOA and PFOS. But for the general population, the exposure routes regulators focus on are drinking water and food — not the jacket in your hallway. Skin contact with a treated garment is considered a much smaller contributor, and there's no good evidence that wearing a DWR-coated running jacket a few times a week does you measurable harm.
What is clearer is the environmental case. Every wash of a PFAS-treated garment sends a small amount into the water system, and those compounds don't break down. That's a large part of why the rules are tightening.
What's changing
The direction of travel across the UK and EU is towards broad restriction of PFAS rather than banning them one compound at a time. Ahead of the regulation, most serious outdoor and running brands have already moved to PFC-free or PFAS-free DWR, and many now say so plainly on the product page. If a brand doesn't mention it at all, that's usually worth an email before you buy.
Practical steps that actually help
- Check the finish, not the fabric. Look for "PFC-free" or "PFAS-free DWR" on waterproofs and shells. Plain training kit rarely needs the question asked.
- Be sceptical of "anti-odour" treatments. Built-in antimicrobial finishes wear off after a few dozen washes, and a kit that's washed properly doesn't need them.
- Keep your kit longer. Buying less is the single most reliable way to reduce your exposure to anything in clothing — and to cut the environmental load.

Where detergent fits in
To be straight about it: no laundry detergent removes PFAS from a treated garment, and any product claiming otherwise deserves a hard look. What a well-made detergent does is stop you from binning kit early.
