How to Clean a Smelly Washing Machine: An Athlete's Guide

You wash your gym kit religiously, air it properly, never leave it festering in the bag — and it still comes out smelling musty. Before you blame your detergent or your training habits, open your washing machine door and have a sniff. If a damp, sour smell hits you, you've found the problem. A smelly washing machine will re-contaminate every load you put through it, and athletes' machines are especially prone to it.
Why athletes' washing machines smell worse
Sports kit is hard on a washing machine. Sweat-soaked synthetics carry far more bacteria into the drum than everyday clothes, and because activewear needs cool washes (30°C or lower to protect elastane), those bacteria are never killed off by heat. Add fabric softener residue, detergent build-up and a door that gets shut while the drum is still damp, and you've got a biofilm — a thin, greasy layer of bacteria and gunk coating the drum, door seal and detergent drawer. That biofilm is what you're smelling, and it transfers straight onto your clean kit.
How to deep clean a smelly washing machine
1. Clean the door seal
Peel back the rubber gasket around the door. You'll likely find black mould, trapped water and possibly a stray sock. Wipe the whole fold with a cloth soaked in a 50:50 white vinegar and water solution. Stubborn mould spots may need a specialist mould remover — check it's safe for rubber first.
2. Scrub the detergent drawer
Remove the drawer completely (most slide out with a press-tab) and soak it in hot soapy water. Scrub the cavity it sits in too — mould loves the roof of that compartment where you can't see it.
3. Run a hot maintenance wash
Run the machine empty on its hottest cycle — 90°C if it has one — with either a washing machine cleaner or 500ml of white vinegar in the drum. This kills the bacteria that cool kit washes leave behind. Do this monthly; weekly if you're training five or more days a week.
4. Clean the filter
The lint filter (usually behind a flap at the bottom front) traps hair, grit and sludge. Drain it over a shallow tray, pull out anything trapped, and rinse. A blocked filter leaves stagnant water sitting in the machine between washes.
5. Leave the door and drawer open
The simplest fix of all: after every wash, leave the door and detergent drawer ajar so the drum dries out. Bacteria and mould need moisture — deny them it.
Stop the smell coming back
Deep cleaning fixes the machine, but if your washing habits don't change, the biofilm returns within weeks. Three habits make the biggest difference:
Ditch fabric softener. It coats the drum (and your kit) in a waxy film that feeds bacteria. It's also the fastest way to ruin the wicking in technical fabrics.
Dose detergent correctly. More detergent doesn't mean cleaner kit — excess doesn't rinse out and becomes food for the biofilm. Follow the dosing guide for your water hardness.
