How to Make Gym Clothes Last Longer: 8 Things You're Probably Getting Wrong

30 June 2026

A decent pair of running tights costs £60-90. A good sports bra is £40+. HYROX race kit can run into hundreds. And yet most people wash their gym clothes in a way that quietly destroys them.

Here are the 8 most common mistakes — and what to do instead.

1. Using Fabric Softener

The biggest one. Fabric softener coats performance fibres with a waxy residue that destroys moisture wicking, traps bacteria (making odour worse), and degrades the DWR coatings on waterproof layers. If you're using softener on gym kit, stop immediately.

2. Washing at Too High a Temperature

Most gym kit should be washed at 30°C, 40°C maximum. High-temperature washes degrade elastane, cause polyester to pill, break down DWR coatings, and shrink merino wool. Check the label — then set the machine cooler than you think you need to.

A good sports detergent like Titan Wash is fully active from 20°C, so low temperatures don't compromise cleaning performance.

3. Leaving Sweaty Kit in Your Gym Bag

Damp kit in a sealed bag is a bacteria incubator. Every hour you leave it there, odour-causing bacteria multiply and embed deeper into the fabric. This makes odour harder to remove and accelerates fabric degradation. Hang kit up to air out as soon as you get home if you can't wash immediately.

4. Not Turning Clothes Inside Out

Sweat, skin cells, and bacteria concentrate on the inside of your kit — the side in contact with your skin. Washing right-side out means the detergent is tackling the outside of the garment while the problem side faces away. Turn everything inside out before it goes in the machine.

5. Using Too Much Detergent

More detergent does not mean cleaner clothes. Excess detergent leaves residue in the fabric that actually traps more dirt and bacteria in subsequent washes. Follow the dosing instructions. For Titan Wash, that's 30g (one scoop) per wash — not two.

6. Tumble Drying on High Heat

High-heat tumble drying is one of the fastest ways to destroy gym kit. Heat degrades elastane (reducing stretch), shrinks natural fibres, and breaks down the construction of technical fabrics. Air drying is always better. If you must tumble dry, use the lowest heat setting.

7. Using Optical Brighteners

Many standard detergents contain optical brighteners — UV-reactive chemicals that make whites look whiter. On gym kit, they deposit a chemical coating on elastane fibres that causes brittleness and premature degradation over repeated washes. Always use a sports detergent that's explicitly free of optical brighteners.

8. Using the Wrong Detergent Full Stop

Standard household detergents aren't formulated for the demands of synthetic performance fabrics. They can leave residue, fail to eliminate odour properly, and contain chemicals that shorten the lifespan of technical kit. A purpose-built sports detergent isn't a luxury — it's the right tool for the job, and it pays for itself by extending the life of expensive kit.

The Simple Kit Care Routine

  1. Don't leave sweaty kit in a bag — hang it to air if you can't wash immediately
  2. Turn everything inside out
  3. Wash at 30°C with a sports-specific enzyme detergent (30g of Titan Wash)
  4. No fabric softener, ever
  5. Air dry wherever possible

That's it. Five steps, and your gym kit will perform and last significantly longer.
