How to Wash CrossFit Clothes Without Ruining Them

30 June 2026

CrossFit is hard on your body. It's even harder on your kit. Chalk-caked barbells, rope climbs, sweat-soaked WODs, and the occasional floor wipe — your CrossFit clothes face challenges that standard laundry guidance simply wasn't written for.

Here's a complete guide to washing CrossFit kit properly: how to eliminate the smell, protect the fabrics, and make your gear last.

Why CrossFit Kit Smells So Bad

The intensity of CrossFit means you're producing significantly more sweat per session than most forms of exercise. That sweat — a cocktail of lactic acid, fatty acids, urea, and proteins — penetrates deep into the tight synthetic weave of your shorts, base layers, and compression gear.

Standard detergent doesn't have the enzyme chemistry to break apart these embedded proteins. The bacteria survive the wash and reactivate the moment your body temperature rises. This is the ghost odour effect — and it's extremely common in CrossFit athletes who train multiple times per week.

The Right Detergent for CrossFit Kit

The single most impactful change you can make is switching to a sports-specific enzyme detergent. Titan Wash uses a High Enzyme Complex that breaks down sweat proteins at the molecular level, combined with Zinc Ricineolate to bind and trap odour molecules so they rinse out completely.

It works at 30°C, is safe on all CrossFit kit fabrics (including compression gear and merino wool), and doesn't contain optical brighteners or chlorine bleach that degrade elastic fibres over time.

The CrossFit Wash Routine

Immediately after training

Don't seal sweaty kit in your bag. If you can't wash straight away, hang your kit out to air. Sealing damp kit in a bag creates perfect conditions for bacteria to multiply and odour to embed more deeply.

Before putting kit in the machine

Turn everything inside out. Sweat, skin cells, and bacteria are concentrated on the inside of your garments — the side against your skin during the WOD. Turning clothes inside out gives the detergent direct access to where the problem is.

Pre-treat particularly stinky items. For kit that's carrying serious ghost odour, add an extra 15g of Titan Wash directly to the garment and leave for 10 minutes before the wash cycle.

In the machine

  • Temperature: 30°C. CrossFit kit is mostly synthetic — polyester, nylon, Lycra, elastane. These fibres degrade with heat. 30°C is enough when you're using the right detergent.
  • Detergent: 30g of Titan Wash directly in the drum, not the drawer.
  • Fabric softener: Never. Softener blocks moisture wicking and traps bacteria.
  • Spin speed: Standard. No need for gentle cycle for most CrossFit kit.

Drying

Air dry wherever possible. Tumble dryers apply heat that degrades elastane and compression properties over time. Hang kit somewhere with good airflow and it'll be dry within a few hours.

If you use a tumble dryer, use the lowest heat setting and remove kit while still slightly damp.

Specific CrossFit Kit: What to Know

Compression shorts and leggings

The elastane in compression gear is particularly sensitive to heat and fabric softener. Wash at 30°C maximum, never use softener, and air dry. Titan Wash is safe and effective on all compression fabrics.

Lifting belts (fabric/neoprene)

Wipe down with a damp cloth and mild detergent. Don't put neoprene in the washing machine.

Chalk-covered items

Chalk (magnesium carbonate) is water-soluble. A standard wash cycle removes it completely without any special treatment. Shake out excess chalk before putting kit in the machine to avoid build-up in the drum.

Rope burn areas (on shirts and long sleeves)

The friction from rope climbs can stress fabric fibres. Wash these items inside out to protect the surface. Check after washing — if fibres are pilling, switch to a mesh laundry bag for those items.

How Often Should You Wash CrossFit Kit?

After every session. CrossFit produces enough sweat that leaving kit unwashed between sessions allows odour-causing bacteria to embed more deeply, making it progressively harder to remove. This is especially true for compression gear that sits close to the skin.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I wash my CrossFit knee sleeves?

Yes. Neoprene knee sleeves should be hand-washed with a small amount of Titan Wash in cool water and air dried. Don't put them in the washing machine as the agitation can damage the neoprene structure.

What about wrist wraps?

Most fabric wrist wraps can go in the washing machine in a mesh laundry bag. Wash at 30°C with Titan Wash and air dry.

My CrossFit shorts keep pilling. Is this the detergent?

Pilling is usually caused by friction (during training or in the wash cycle) rather than detergent. Wash items inside out, use a mesh laundry bag for delicate items, and avoid high-heat drying. A gentle enzyme detergent like Titan Wash won't cause pilling.
