There's a specific kind of gym-kit smell that doesn't behave like normal laundry. It survives the wash. It hides while the top is clean and dry, then reappears the moment you start sweating. Athletes have a name for it: permastink.
Also called permafunk, or just "that gym clothes smell". This is what it actually is, why the name is only half right, and how to tell whether a piece of kit is worth saving.
What is permastink?
Permastink is body odour that has become semi-permanent in synthetic sportswear. Not a stain, not dirt, and not a sign you're washing badly. It's a build-up of sweat oils, proteins and the bacteria that feed on them, held deep inside the fibre where ordinary detergent doesn't reach.
The giveaway is the timing. Ordinary dirty-laundry smell is there when you pick the item up. Permastink isn't. Kit comes out of the machine smelling perfectly clean, sits in the drawer smelling of nothing, and only turns once your body heat and fresh sweat wake the bacteria back up.
If your kit smells fine until you wear it, that's permastink rather than a wash you got wrong.
How to tell if you've got it
- Kit smells clean out of the wash but sours within minutes of exercise
- The smell is strongest at the underarms, chest and back — where you sweat most
- Rewashing the same item makes no lasting difference
- It affects your synthetic kit but not your cotton t-shirts
- Damp-sniffing a clean item brings the smell back before you've even worn it
That last one is the quickest test. Run a clean, dry item under warm water and smell it. If the odour returns, the source is still in the fabric.
Which fabrics get it worst
Polyester is the biggest offender. It's the most hydrophobic of the common performance fabrics, so it pulls sweat oils in and holds them tightly. Nylon and elastane blends sit close behind.
Merino wool resists it far better — it's naturally antimicrobial and handles moisture differently — though it isn't immune, especially in wool-synthetic blends. Cotton barely suffers from it at all, because it absorbs water rather than repelling it, so the oils rinse away instead of embedding.
This is why permastink tends to hit your best kit hardest. The more technical and moisture-wicking the fabric, the more prone it is.
Is it actually permanent?
Mostly, no — and this is where the name oversells the problem.
"Perma" describes how it behaves with ordinary detergent, not what's chemically possible. Standard supermarket detergents use surfactants designed to lift water-soluble dirt off cotton. They cannot get to oil locked inside a synthetic fibre, so no number of repeat washes will shift it. From the user's point of view it looks permanent.
Change the chemistry and it usually clears. Enzyme-based detergents break the sweat proteins and fatty acids apart at molecular level, so the residue can finally rinse out rather than sitting there feeding bacteria. That's the mechanism Titan Wash is built on — a high enzyme complex, plus Zinc Ricineolate to bind the odour molecules and oxygenating agents to lift the broken-down residue clear of the fibre.
Rescuing kit that's far gone
For an item that's been carrying permastink for months, give the enzymes time rather than heat.
Soak it in a sink with a full 30g scoop, leave it for a few hours, then wash as normal at 30°C. Most kit improves noticeably on the first wash. Genuinely stubborn pieces can take two or three before the accumulated deposits fully clear.
The only kit truly past saving is where the fabric itself has broken down — the elastane has gone, the weave has pilled through. That's rare, and it's worth trying a pre-soak before you write anything off.

Frequently asked questions
Is permastink a real term? It's informal — coined by runners and gym-goers rather than textile scientists — but it describes a well-documented phenomenon in synthetic sportswear.
Will a hot wash kill it? Heat kills bacteria but doesn't remove the sweat-protein residue they feed on, so the smell returns. It also destroys elastane and DWR coatings. Not a good trade.
Can new kit get it? Yes. It builds over time, but heavy training and washing with the wrong detergent can establish it within weeks.
Does fabric softener help? The opposite. It seals the oils in with a waxy coating and blocks wicking. Never use it on sportswear.
