One of the biggest mistakes athletes make is guessing the water temperature when washing gym clothes. Too hot and you damage the fabric — and, counterintuitively, clean it less well. There is a sweet spot, and it's lower than most people assume.
Why water temperature matters for gym clothes
Temperature affects three things when you wash sports kit:
- Enzyme activity. Modern sports detergents clean using enzymes that break down sweat proteins. Enzymes have an optimal working range — and they are destroyed by high heat.
- Fabric longevity. Heat degrades elastane, fades colours, softens synthetic fibres and strips DWR coatings from technical outerwear.
- Odour removal. The smell in gym kit comes from sweat proteins and body oils bound into the fibre. Removing them is a chemistry problem, not a heat problem.
The right temperature: 30°C
30°C is your default for gym kit. It is warm enough for enzymes to work at full pace and cool enough to leave elastane, DWR coatings and merino intact.
This only holds if your detergent is built for the job. When 40°C makes sense
40°C is the sensible upper limit, and it has a place:
- Heavily soiled kit — mud from rugby, football or trail running
- Cotton-heavy gym t-shirts and towels, which tolerate heat well
- Dense fabrics like hand wraps and gi uniforms
- Kit that has been left damp in a bag for days
But 40°C isn't a free upgrade. Washing at 40°C repeatedly wears down the stretch recovery in elastane — you won't notice after one wash, you'll notice after fifty, when a waistband has gone slack. Use it when the load genuinely warrants it, not as your standing setting.
Why you should never go above 40°C
This is the part that surprises people. Turning the dial up past 40°C doesn't clean your kit better — it actively works against you.
Enzymes denature at high temperatures. The proteins doing the cleaning unfold and stop functioning, so a 60°C wash can leave more sweat residue behind than a 30°C wash with the same detergent. Heat can also bake protein stains into fabric rather than lifting them.
On top of that, temperatures above 40°C will degrade elastane far faster, strip water-repellent finishes off technical jackets, and shrink and felt any merino in the load. We go through this in more detail in can you wash gym clothes at 40 or 60 degrees.
The one genuine exception is contamination rather than odour — if someone in the house has been ill, standard hygiene advice does favour a hot wash. Run that as a separate load of cotton, and keep your technical kit out of it.
What about hard water?
Much of the UK is a hard water area, and hard water does reduce detergent efficiency. The fix is not more heat. Is 30°C really hot enough to clean gym clothes?
Yes, with a detergent built for sweat. Cleaning power at low temperatures comes from enzymes and oxygenating agents, not heat. Enzyme systems in sports detergents are formulated to be fully active from 20°C.
Does a hotter wash kill more bacteria?
It kills more bacteria, but it doesn't remove the sweat residue that causes odour to come back the moment you sweat again — and it damages your kit in the process. Removing the residue is what actually solves the smell.
Can I wash gym clothes at 60°C?
You can, but you shouldn't make a habit of it. Above 40°C you degrade elastane, strip DWR coatings, felt merino, and denature the very enzymes doing the cleaning.
The bottom line
Default to 30°C. Go to 40°C when the kit is genuinely dirty rather than just sweaty. Don't go above 40°C, and use a detergent designed for sweat proteins — that combination removes odour without shortening the life of your gear.
