It's one of the most-asked questions in gym laundry, and the answers online contradict each other constantly. One camp insists you need 60°C to kill bacteria. Another says anything warmer than cold will wreck your leggings. So: can you wash gym clothes at 40 or 60 degrees, and should you?
The short answer is that you can — your kit won't disintegrate. But both temperatures cost you something, and neither solves the problem most people are actually trying to solve.
Washing gym clothes at 40 degrees
40°C is the default on most UK machines, so most gym kit ends up there by accident rather than choice. It's warm enough to shift body oils, and it won't ruin a pair of leggings overnight.
The damage is cumulative rather than dramatic. Elastane — the stretch fibre in nearly everything you train in — gradually loses its recovery with repeated heat exposure. You won't spot it after one wash. You'll spot it after fifty, when the waistband on your favourite shorts has gone slack and your compression top has stopped compressing. The same slow decline hits the DWR coating on a running jacket and the bonded seams in a sports bra.
So 40°C is survivable, not optimal. Just don't make it your default.
Washing gym clothes at 60 degrees
60°C is where it gets risky. This is the nuclear option — the setting people reach for when kit smells and nothing else has worked.
It does kill more bacteria. It also softens synthetic fibres, degrades elastane considerably faster than 40°C, strips water-repellent finishes off technical outerwear, and can bake protein stains into fabric instead of lifting them. Here's the part that catches people out: heat doesn't remove odour. The smell in synthetic kit comes from sweat proteins and body oils bound into the fibre itself. Kill the bacteria but leave the residue behind, and the smell returns the moment you start sweating again. Why 30°C usually beats both
Turning the dial up is a blunt instrument. What actually breaks down sweat residue is enzymes, and modern enzyme systems don't need heat to work.

There are real exceptions. If someone in the house has been ill, or kit is visibly soiled with mud, blood or anything biological, standard hygiene advice does favour a hot wash — that's a contamination question, not an odour one.
The key is not to send everything through together. Wash technical kit as its own load at 30°C and put genuinely dirty cotton through separately at a higher temperature. Mixing the two is how people end up cooking their leggings to sanitise a pair of socks.
