Short answer: yes, most gym clothes are breathable — but "breathable" is doing a lot of heavy lifting as a word, and the way you wash your kit has more influence over it than most people realise.
Here's what the word actually means, which fabrics deliver it, and why your favourite training top may not breathe like it used to.
Breathability isn't one thing
When brands say "breathable", they usually mean one of two properties, and the difference matters.
Air permeability is how easily air passes straight through the fabric. A loose mesh running vest is highly air permeable. A waterproof shell is not.
Moisture vapour transfer is how well the fabric moves sweat vapour from the inside to the outside, where it can evaporate. This is what a Gore-Tex jacket does — it blocks liquid water coming in while letting sweat vapour out. Almost no air passes through it, yet it's genuinely breathable in the technical sense.
Then there's wicking, which is a third thing again: liquid sweat being drawn along fibres and spread across a wide surface area so it evaporates faster. Polyester does this well precisely because it barely absorbs water.
How common activewear fabrics compare
Polyester is the workhorse of activewear, and it's breathable in the wicking sense rather than the airy sense. It absorbs around 0.4% of its weight in water, so sweat sits on the fibre surface and moves outward instead of soaking in. The downside is that the same oil-friendly surface holds onto sweat residue, which is why polyester dominates gym kit and also why it develops that stale smell.
Nylon behaves similarly but absorbs slightly more moisture, so it feels softer and dries a little slower.
Merino wool is the outlier. It absorbs up to 30% of its weight in moisture vapour without feeling wet, and it regulates temperature in both directions. It's excellent for long efforts and multi-day use, less ideal for high-intensity sessions where you want fast drying.
Bamboo viscose and Tencel feel cool and soft, but they hold water and stay damp longer under hard effort.
Cotton is air permeable but poor for training: it absorbs sweat and holds it, leaving you in a heavy, cold layer.
Elastane and Lycra add stretch, not breathability. A high-elastane compression piece with a dense knit will breathe less than a looser polyester top, even though both are technically "performance fabric".
Why your kit gets less breathable over time
This is the part that catches people out. Activewear doesn't usually lose breathability because the fibres wear out. It loses it because something is sitting on top of them.
Fabric softener is the biggest offender. It works by depositing a waxy cationic film across the fibres, which is exactly what you don't want on a fabric whose job is to move moisture. It flattens wicking and traps odour underneath. We've covered why softener and gym clothes don't mix in detail.
Detergent residue does something similar, more slowly. Heavy-duty powders formulated for cotton bedding often contain optical brighteners and high-foam surfactants that build up in technical knits over dozens of washes.
Bacterial biofilm is the third layer. Sweat residue feeds odour-causing bacteria, which build a film that clogs the spaces between fibres. That's the stage where a top smells fine dry and then goes off within minutes of you warming up.
Washing kit so it keeps breathing
The fix is about removing residue, not adding anything. Skip softener entirely, wash at 30°C, turn kit inside out, and don't overload the drum — fabric needs room to rinse properly.
Detergent choice matters more than people expect. FAQ
Are gym leggings breathable?
It depends on the knit density rather than the fibre. Most leggings are polyester or nylon with 15-25% elastane, which breathes adequately, but squat-proof opaque fabrics are deliberately dense and will breathe less than a lighter legging.
Is polyester or cotton more breathable for the gym?
Cotton lets more air through, but polyester manages sweat far better. For training, polyester wins on comfort and drying time. Cotton is the better choice only for low-intensity, low-sweat activity.
Does washing gym clothes make them less breathable?
Washing itself doesn't. Fabric softener, residue-heavy detergents and washing too hot do. Wash at 30°C with a residue-free sports detergent and breathability holds up across the life of the garment.
Are gym clothes with PFAS more breathable?
Not inherently. PFAS-based finishes are about water and stain repellency rather than breathability, and PFAS-free alternatives now perform comparably — more on that in our guide to PFAS in activewear.
