Ask the internet how to fix smelly gym kit and someone will tell you to tip white vinegar in the machine. It is cheap, it is in most cupboards, and it has the reassuring feel of an old-fashioned remedy. But does washing gym clothes with vinegar actually work?
The honest answer: it does something. It just doesn't do the thing most people are hoping for.
What vinegar actually does in a wash
White vinegar is roughly 5% acetic acid, and that acidity does three genuinely useful jobs. It softens water, dissolving the calcium and magnesium that make hard water hard — which matters a lot across the south and east of England. It cuts detergent residue, helping rinse leftover surfactant out of the weave if you have been overdosing your powder. And it mildly deodorises, neutralising some alkaline odour compounds, which is why a vinegar rinse can leave kit smelling fresher straight out of the drum.
All of that is real. Vinegar is a decent rinse aid, particularly if your kit feels stiff or waxy. If you have been using fabric conditioner on activewear, a vinegar rinse will start stripping the coating off — though the better move is to stop using softener on gym clothes altogether.
Where vinegar falls down
The smell in gym kit is not really a smell problem. It is a residue problem.
Sweat itself is nearly odourless. What stinks is what happens afterwards: bacteria feed on the proteins, oils and sebum that soak into synthetic fibres, and the by-products are that sour, acrid smell. Polyester and nylon actively hold onto body oils, so those deposits build up wash after wash, sitting deep in the fibre where water alone never reaches.
Vinegar has no enzymes, so it cannot break down protein or oil. It neutralises some odour molecules already floating about, but leaves the food source sitting in the fabric. That is why the vinegar trick so often looks like it worked on the airer, then fails the moment you start sweating — body heat and fresh moisture reactivate bacteria that were never removed. This is the mechanism behind permastink.
Is vinegar safe for your kit and your machine?
Occasionally, yes. Habitually, less so.
Repeated acidic washes can degrade elastane and Lycra over time — exactly what you don't want in compression gear, leggings or a sports bra. Acid can also be hard on rubber door seals and internal hoses, and several manufacturers advise against regular vinegar use, so check your manual before making a habit of it.
Two rules if you do use it. Never mix vinegar with chlorine bleach: the combination releases chlorine gas. And don't put vinegar in the same compartment as your detergent — most detergents are alkaline, so the two cancel each other out. Put it in the fabric conditioner drawer instead, around 60ml per load, so it goes in at the rinse stage.
What actually removes the odour
If vinegar is a rinse aid, what you need is something that digests the deposits. That means enzymes.

Does vinegar kill the bacteria in gym clothes?
Not reliably. Acetic acid has some antibacterial effect in the lab, but at the dilution you get in a full machine it is nowhere near strong enough to sanitise fabric. It also leaves the residue bacteria feed on, so any colony is quickly re-established.
How much vinegar should I put in a load of gym clothes?
Around 60ml of plain white vinegar in the fabric conditioner drawer. Don't use malt, balsamic or cider vinegar — they contain sugars and colourants that can stain.
Will the vinegar smell stay in my clothes?
No. Acetic acid is volatile and evaporates as kit dries, so the smell goes within an hour or two of air drying. If it lingers, you used too much or your machine is not rinsing properly.
Can I use vinegar and Titan Wash together?

The verdict
Washing gym clothes with vinegar is not useless, but it treats a symptom. It freshens, de-scales and strips softener residue.
